Differences training

Mandatory Differences Training is legally required for some aircraft which fall within the SEP class and must be signed off in the pilot’s logbook.

The commonest of these are:
• tailwheel conversion;
• complex aircraft (constant speed propeller + retractable undercarriage);
• glass cockpit;
• SPLC (single power lever control) – which is common on diesel engine aircraft.

In addition, it may be prudent to do some differences training if moving to a different aircraft. Even if not legally required, the aircraft owner, group, club or insurer may require it. Transitioning from a C152 to a PA28 or C172, or to an LSA (Light Sport Aircraft) are cases in point.
